Anterior Abdominal Wall Abscess After Appendicectomy

Executive Summary:
An anterior abdominal wall abscess is a rare complication after appendicectomy. I report a 42-year-old man, who presented with a warm, firm and painful swelling of the abdominal wall extending from the right flank, right iliac fossa up to the midline, all below the umbilicus, three days after appendectomy for appendicitis with gangrenous appendix, perforated appendix at the base with a peri-appendicular intra-peritoneal abscess. Its treatment consisted of pus evacuation, daily dressings, and antibiotic therapy according to the local antibiogram. The surgical care was good with disappearance of fever and wounds cleansing and granulation, which allowed secondary suture after 15 days of wound dressings. Although there was a good final outcome, it increased hospital stay, caused the use of several antibiotics and escalated the financial cost of appendicectomy.
